Enabling machine translation support, Section and Content translation tools in your Wikipedia
[łahgo áshłééh]Hello Navajo Wikipedians!
Apologies as this message is not in your language, Please help translate to your language.
The WMF Language team plans to enable the Section and Content translation tools to Navajo Wikipedia by default. Also, the team is considering adding machine translation (MT) support with MinT to the tools. MinT may be providing limited support for your language, so we want to make sure it is useful for the community. For this, my team would like members of your community to:
- Test the machine translation support in a test instance. You can paste multiple pieces of content from different Wikipedia articles and check whether the provided result is a useful starting point for a translation.
- Give us feedback if the machine translation quality is okay to be on your Wikipedia by default, as an optional service or if it is not useful at all.
- Let us know if you have any objections to having the Section and Content translation enabled by default in this Wikipedia.
Below is background information about the tools and how you can test them.
Background information
Content Translation has been a successful tool for editors to create content in their language. Since its release in 2015, the tool has aided the translation of more than one million articles across all languages. However, the tool is in beta in Navajo Wikipedia, limiting its discoverability and use. Being in beta also blocks enabling the Section translation in your Wikipedia.
Section Translation extends the capabilities of Content Translation to support mobile devices. On mobile, the tool will:
- Guide you to translate one section at a time to expand existing articles or create new ones
- Make it easy to transfer knowledge across languages anytime from your mobile device
MinT (Machine in Translation) is a machine translation service hosted in the Wikimedia Infrastructure. It is designed to provide translations from many MT models. The model available for your Wikipedia is the MADLAD-400 open-source translation model.
Our request
The MADLAD-400 MT is available for your Wiki in our test instance. We want you to test it (translate sentences and paragraphs from articles) in our test instance:https://translate.wmcloud.org. Let us know in this thread if the quality of the automatic translation generated is okay to enable it in Navajo Wikipedia along with the Section and Content translation tool.
Our plans to enable the tools and the machine translation support
We plan to deploy the tools with the MT support by the 4th of March. If there are no objections from your community, we will deploy them. We want to provide the tools in the way they best serve the community, so we are open to make further adjustments after the deployment based on the experience of the community.
We look forward to getting your feedback in this thread. Thank you!
On behalf of the WMF Language team.

- Total giberrish and junk, of course. Choyoołʼįįhí:Seb az86556 > haneʼ 05:57, 15 Atsá Biyáázh 2024 (UTC)
- Hello @Seb az86556, thank you for your feedback. If you have tried the MADLAD-400 machine translation in our test instance, the quality is not good. In that case, we will not enable it for your Wiki. The Navajo Wikipedia will only have the Content and Section translation tool by default. Please let me know if you have any questions.
- Best regards,

An improved dashboard for the Content Translation tool
[łahgo áshłééh]Hello Wikipedians,
Apologies as this message is not in your language, Please help translate to your language.
The Language and Product Localization team has improved the Content Translation dashboard to create a consistent experience for all contributors using mobile and desktop devices. Below is a breakdown of important information about the improvement.
What are the improvements?
The improved translation dashboard allows all logged-in users of the tool to enjoy a consistent experience regardless of their type of device.
With a harmonized experience, logged-in desktop users can now access the capabilities shown in the image below.

Does this improvement change the current accessibility of this tool in this Wikipedia?
The Content translation tool will still be in beta; therefore, only logged-in users who activated the tool from the will continue to have access to the content translation tool. Also, if the tool is only available to a specific , it will remain that way.
When do we plan to implement this improvement?
We will implement it on your Wikipedia and others by 24th, March 2025.
What happens to the former dashboard after we implement the improvement?
You can still access it in the tool for some time. We will remove it from all Wikipedias by May 2025, as maintaining it will no longer be productive.
Where can I test this improvement and report any issues before it is implemented in this Wiki?
You can try the improved capabilities in the test wiki using this link: https://test.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:ContentTranslation&campaign=contributionsmenu&to=es&filter-type=automatic&filter-id=previous-edits&active-list=suggestions&from=en#/ .
If you notice an issue related to the improved dashboard in the test wiki, please let us know in this thread and ping me, or report it in Phabricator, adding these tags: BUG REPORT and ContentTranslation.
Please ask us any questions regarding this improvement in this thread. Thank you!
On behalf of the Language and Product Localization team.
I have started a proposal on Metawiki to propose the closure of this wiki. If you have an input on this, please have your say. Thanks! Sisimiut2000 (talk) 08:31, 18 Yaʼiishjááshchilí 2025 (UTC)
Migration to Parsoid
[łahgo áshłééh]Hello everyone! I am glad to inform you that as the next step in the Parser Unification project, Parsoid will soon be turned on as the default article renderer on your wiki. We are gradually increasing the number of wikis using Parsoid, with the intention of making it the default wikitext parser for MediaWiki's next long-term support release. This will make our wikis more reliable and consistent for editors, readers, and tools to use, as well as making the development of future wikitext features easier.
If this disrupts your workflow, don’t worry! You can still opt out through a user preference or turn Parsoid off on the current page using the Tools submenu, as described in the Extension:ParserMigration documentation.
There is more information about our roll-out strategy available, including the testing done before we turn on Parsoid for a new wiki.
To report bugs and issues, please look at our known issues documentation and if you found a new bug please create a phab ticket and tag the Content Transform Team in Phabricator.

[łahgo áshłééh]Hello. Please help pick a name for the new Abstract Wikipedia wiki project. This project will be a wiki that will enable users to combine functions from Wikifunctions and data from Wikidata in order to generate natural language sentences in any supported languages. These sentences can then be used by any Wikipedia (or elsewhere).
There will be two rounds of voting, each followed by legal review of candidates, with votes beginning on 20 October and 17 November 2025. Our goal is to have a final project name selected on mid-December 2025. If you would like to participate, then please learn more and vote now at meta-wiki. Thank you!

Feminism and Folklore 2026 starts soon
[łahgo áshłééh]
- Invitation to Organize Feminism and Folklore 2026
Dear Wiki Community,
We are pleased to invite Wikimedia communities, affiliates, and independent contributors to organize the Feminism and Folklore 2026 writing competition on your local Wikipedia.
The international campaign will run from 1 February to 31 March 2026 and aims to improve coverage of feminism, women’s histories, gender-related topics, and folk culture across Wikipedia projects.
- About the Campaign
Feminism and Folklore is a global writing initiative that complements the Wiki Loves Folklore photography competition. While Wiki Loves Folklore focuses on visual documentation, this writing campaign addresses the gender gap on Wikipedia by improving encyclopedic content related to folk culture and marginalized voices.
- What Can Participants Write About?
Communities can contribute by creating, expanding, or translating articles related to:
- Folk festivals, rituals, and celebrations
- Folk dances, music, and traditional performances
- Women and queer figures in folklore
- Women in mythology and oral traditions
- Women warriors, witches, and witch-hunting narratives
- Fairy tales, folk stories, and legends
- Folk games, sports, and cultural practices
Participants may work from curated article lists or generate new article suggestions using campaign tools.
